I've been using generative image tools seriously for about two years now. Long enough that the initial excitement has worn off and I have a working sense of where they actually help and where they quietly waste your time.
The changes are real but uneven. A few things shifted more than I expected. Others seemed like they'd be transformative and turned out to matter a lot less than the hype suggested. And some parts of design work — the parts that require judgment, iteration, and understanding how physical things go together — are barely touched.
What actually changed
The most genuine shift is in early exploration. Before these tools, the gap between a verbal idea and a visual one required significant technical skill or significant time. You had to know Blender, or hire someone who did, or spend days building something rough enough to communicate. That gap is smaller now. You can get to "something visual" much faster, and that changes how early-stage conversations go.
When I was doing concept renders a decade ago, the process started with research — patent filings, supply chain CAD leaks, teardown photos — and then weeks of 3D modeling before anything visual existed to react to. Iteration happened mostly in your head, or in rough sketches. Now that first visual checkpoint can happen the same day. That matters.
The other real change is in the texture of exploration. With traditional 3D tools, you commit fairly early. Every revision costs time, so you build the thing you think is most likely to work and refine from there. With generative tools, you can run ten directions in parallel before committing to any of them. Exploring is faster and broader, if less precise.
Where the limits show up
The problems surface the moment you need specificity. Generative tools like Midjourney have a real ceiling on mechanical accuracy. Ask for a product shot of a laptop hinge and you'll get something that looks vaguely right from a distance. Get closer and the geometry doesn't make sense. The pivot point is in the wrong place. The thickness is inconsistent. A manufactured object has to be buildable — every surface has a reason, every edge reflects a tooling constraint — and generative tools have no model of any of that.
This matters more than people acknowledge. Consumer electronics are shaped by their internals, their manufacturing process, the physics of the materials. A render that ignores those constraints looks off to anyone who's spent time with real products, even if they can't articulate exactly why. There's a kind of mechanical plausibility that comes from knowing how a hinge works, and it doesn't come from prompting.
Material consistency is the other obvious gap. Get the same product in different lighting conditions, or from different angles, and generative tools struggle to keep the material reading consistent. What looked like brushed aluminum in one shot looks like painted plastic in the next. For concept work reviewed quickly this might not matter. For anything communicating a specific material direction, it's a problem.
Text and logos are famously bad, though they've improved. Numbers on a keyboard still tend to drift. Geometric precision in general — symmetry, parallel lines, consistent radii — requires constant correction.
How this compares to traditional 3D
The tools I used for the hardware concept work on this site — Blender for modeling, KeyShot for rendering — are still better for anything requiring mechanical accuracy or precise material representation. A model built in Blender exists as a real geometric object. You can check that the hinge geometry makes physical sense. You can verify that the port spacing matches the rumored logic board dimensions. You can change the material and have it apply consistently across every render.
The trade-off is time. A KeyShot render that looks photorealistic took days of work before it got there. Generative tools produce something photorealistic-looking in minutes, but the accuracy isn't there, and if you need to change something you're starting over rather than adjusting a parameter.
In practice these approaches are more complementary than competitive. Use generative tools early, when you're figuring out direction and don't need precision. Switch to 3D when you're past exploration and need to communicate something specific. The mistake is using either tool for the other's job.
What hasn't changed
The judgment about what to make hasn't changed. Knowing which direction is worth pursuing, why a particular proportion feels right, what the precedents are and why they matter — that still requires someone who's spent time looking at and thinking about designed objects. Generative tools produce output efficiently. They don't produce the criteria for evaluating that output.
Research hasn't changed either. When I was building concept renders in 2015, I spent a lot of time reading patent filings, studying supply chain leaks, understanding what constraints Apple's actual design team was working under. That research was what gave the renders their plausibility. No tool produces that kind of domain knowledge for you.
Revision based on feedback is still slow. The generate-evaluate-refine loop, which is most of design work, is faster on individual steps but the same shape overall. You still have to look at what you made, decide what's wrong with it, and make it again. Tools change the speed of the making part. They don't change the difficulty of the deciding part.
The practical upshot
If you're doing design work that involves physical objects, and you're hoping generative tools will replace the need to understand manufacturing, materials, and mechanical geometry — they won't. That knowledge still matters and still shapes what good output looks like.
What changes is how quickly you can get to rough visual ideas, and how broad the exploration can be before you commit to anything. Think of it as: AI compresses the time between idea and first visual, and expands the range of directions you can explore cheaply. Those are real benefits. They're also narrower than the headline version suggests.
Two years in, the tools I actually use regularly are the ones that fit into an existing workflow at the right stage. Fast visual generation for early exploration. Traditional 3D for anything requiring mechanical accuracy. Editing for refinement. The work that benefits most from AI assistance is work where getting to a rough visual quickly matters more than getting details precisely right. That's a real category. It's just not the whole job.
